this TLC series, much superior to the similar "Inked", is a look into the daily operations of a tattoo parlor in miami, florida. unlike "Inked", "Miami Ink" is not a soap opera involving a bunch of jerky control-freaks; the guys and gal at miami ink are genuinely nice and compassionate individuals. the show shows what it takes to run a tattoo parlor, the artistic and moral decisions tattoo artists make on a daily basis, as well as their true devotion to their art. the artists are also truly talented; Kat von D, the 24 year old tattoo prodigy is utterly amazing; her specialty is black and grey portrait tattoos that have to be seen to be believed. chris garver is widely considered to be one of the best tattoo artists in the world, and ami james, darren brass, and chris nunez round out the crew with their excellent and eclectic art. i also like how they get into the tradition of tattoo, visiting artists in japan and hawaii to learn and experience new (old) techniques. oh and we must not forget the loyal apprentice yoji, family man with a small baby to support, who takes his lumps graciously and with honor. it's not just about the artists and their stories, but also about their customers...everyone seems to have a very good reason for getting tattooed (with a few exceptions;) ). if you have any interest in tattoos or human nature, this is a fascinating and educational show!

ah, always drama, drama, drama...Kat Von D has left Miami Ink, the result of a personality clash between her and Ami James. Seems that her strict adherence to her specialty was causing a problem in the shop, as she was having a hard time agreeing to do anything other than black and grey work. However, as a result, TLC has given her her own show, which will premiere in August 2007. She has opened her own shop and manned it with a variety of other well-known female artists and her husband, Oliver Peck. I am not surprised that TLC gave her her own show; she's one in a million personality-wise, and a virtuoso talent on top of it. Of course her new shop is located in L.A., the town she loves so much. The new show is called "L.A. Ink", and her new shop is called "High Voltage Tattoo". Miami Ink is currently using her departure as an excuse to showcase other talented tattooist from around the US. Sadly, there are no websites up for either the new show or the new shop, but i will post when these finally appear.

hey everyone in blog land. I am quite taken by the comments and information from you guys about miami ink. After having FOXTEL in Australia for only a short time I taken to love watching the daily going ons at miami ink. It is unbelivable that many artists can be that friendly and easygoing as they are. I would be interested to see how long it would take to get an appointment there. It seems that alot of people just walk in off the street and ask for what they want done. Its sad to see that Kat has left but can totally understand why. She has a amazing gift of the black and white tattoos. I myself would love to get one done by her. Anyway I think Ami is hot and pretty cool as well. But you have to see for yourself. If you have been to the shop in Miami please let me know if it is for real?
