sarit chadad (hadad) is a young israeli singer whos' family is originally from gruzniya. she started sneaking out of the house at a very young age (9 years old) to perform in clubs, and was considered a singing musical prodigy, specializing in "muzika mizrachit". muzika mizrachit (or "eastern music") is an "oriental style" of music, heavily influenced by the sounds of countries like yemen, egypt, and greece. unfortunately, her parents strongly opposed her desire to perform, and it wasn't until she was 15 that she was allowed to perform music in public again. the rest is history!
most israelis are on the fence about this ethnic style of singing. if you have never heard it, i suppose the cultural equivalent would be soul singing, for better or worse. yes, it is soulful, but many feel the histrionics of muzika mizrachit overpowers the quality of the music. in sarit chadad's case, however, she blends humor and artistry to create a more palatable (for some) and poppy version of the genre.
she often works with kobi oz, the lead singer and songwriter for Tipex, an artistically respected band in israel. her alliance with tipex has given her some artistic integrity with the israeli public, but i think she will forever be the music of busdrivers and shuk vendors. i have been listening to her music since 1997, and i still love the stuff she puts out, which is incredibly prolific. she also puts on a great live show (like most israeli performers). it's hard to imagine that such a powerful voice could come out of such a tiny person.
