Woe is a Philadelphia-based black metal band that strives to eschew the cartoon-like theatrics found within the genre in an effort to create darker, more powerful, honest music that is more in tune to the traditional spirit of the art. The first full-length was released in September 2008 to glowing reviews and was been described as 'the most important black metal release in years' by one journalist. In early 2009, the album was made available as a DRM-free pay-what-you-want download directly from the band's website.
