although this pertains directly to musicians and record labels in the UK, there is no doubt a lot of international cross over.

student sues amazon for erasing his homework along with copy of george orwell's 1984   243 views  [1]

the homework was in the form of footnotes attached to the copy of 1984, which amazon recently erased from purchasers' kindles without warning when they were notified it was being distributed online in violation of its copyright. jeff bezos had already apologized for the affair, and this seems to cement the notion amazon will refrain from remotely deleting any more kindle books in the future.

Sony Pictures CEO calls for "guardrails for the internet" to protect copyrighted content   164 views  [1]

while the article itself is rather bothersome, the comments following are rather informative and enlightened. as is the case with one poster who cites Robert Heinlein on the topic of corporations:

"There has grown in the minds of certain groups in this country the idea that just because a man or corporation has made a profit out of the public for a number of years, the government and the courts are charged with guaranteeing such a profit in the future, even in the face of changing circumstances and contrary to public interest. This strange doctrine is supported by neither statute or common law. Neither corporations or individuals have the right to come into court and ask that the clock of history be stopped, or turned back."

or another poster who refers to Tim O'Reilly's idea of piracy as progressive taxation:

"Basically, copying is good for artists who don't already sell huge numbers. Yes, Metallica takes a hit from copying. On the other hand, every other band in the world that you've never heard of is helped by copying. Unknown artists don't worry about piracy, they worry about obscurity. No one cares about us enough to bother to steal our art."
