i like the part of the article that mentions private networks missing something by not jumping on the off-the-air bandwagon. basic cable channels like comedy central or discovery could only benefit from selling their advertising to a larger audience by broadcasting over the air. i can even imagine specialty networks like showtime, HBO or starz broadcasting encrypted content to be decrypted by a set top box or additional tivo software modules for a monthly subscription fee, which would allow people to get these channels by paying for them, and only for them -- circumventing the virtually redundant 50-60$ base price tag attached to almost every cable or dish service out there.

i've just recently ditched DirecTV and their crummy DVR in favor of a Tivo HD hooked to a ClearStream 4 antenna and i couldn't be happier. glorious uncompressed HD network television for the sum total of 13$ a month for Tivo service and an additional flat 9$ a month for Netflix on demand. you can even get movies from various on-demand providers like Amazon, which is a pretty good substitute for pay-per-view.
